THE STUBBLE SOLUTION
Palak Jolly (IB1C)
We are a youth team that aims to reduce the air pollution that turns Delhi into a gas chamber around October every year. Having observed various statistics, it is imperative to realise that the root cause lies in massive stubble burning in farmlands of Punjab and Haryana. It has been observed that up to 70% of Delhi’s peak pollution is due to stubble burning, and that breathing peak Delhi air equates to smoking 50 cigarettes. Due to lack of monetary resources, time and incentive, burning the stubble seems the most viable option to poor farmers who cultivate at subsistence level. Our objective is to create and manage a marketing-based cooperative society led by farmers and for them, in order to present innovative uses of stubble and incentivise through profit out if it. We aim to directly connect the cooperative with a network of potential clients of stubble in several industries, some of which are packaging, handicrafts, and paper. This model emits middlemen to provide a direct pathway for creating demand in the market and allow farmers to profit out of what they burn.
